About This Episode

Danielle Lyn’s Background

Danielle Lyn is an attorney with nearly a decade of legal experience, but her professional identity has never been limited to her job title. A graduate of FAMU College of Law, Danielle began her career in public service before transitioning into corporate law. Today, she works in employee relations and compliance at a financial services company. But she’s also stepping boldly into a new season: one that prioritizes purpose, passion, and personal impact.

“There’s so much more to me. There’s so much more value than just my label as an attorney," shares Danielle Lyn on You Are A Lawyer.

Danielle is a mentor, podcast host, and coach for mid-career millennials—especially Black professionals—who are reevaluating their paths and seeking more fulfilling work. Through her platform Redefined Radio and her own lived experience, she’s helping others rewrite what success means.

Why Law School

Danielle didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming a lawyer—she loved music and the arts. But as a first-generation Jamaican-American and child of immigrants, pursuing a stable and “serious” career felt like a non-negotiable. Law made sense because of her comfort with public speaking and her analytical mind. She entered law school with the goal of becoming a prosecutor, inspired by how Black victims like Trayvon Martin were depicted in the media and courtroom.

"I felt like we needed more representation from the state side, from the prosecution side to tell our stories and paint us as humans and paint us as victims when we are victimized," reflects Danielle Lyn on Episode 187 of You Are a Lawyer.

Yet, the criminal law path didn’t stick. A third-year clinic experience opened her eyes to the day-to-day grind of the system—and the salary realities of public service law. Through coursework and exposure to business law, she discovered a different interest and began to shift her aspirations toward the corporate world.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Danielle is a big believer in exploring your options—and that starts with understanding the range of opportunities a JD provides. She cautions that law school can create tunnel vision, pushing students toward narrow paths like litigation or prosecution. But the truth is, your legal education has taught you far more than how to draft a memo—it’s trained you in critical thinking, empathy, business acumen, and more.

“There are so many other things that you can do with the knowledge and expertise you got from just getting your JD alone," emphasizes Danielle Lyn on Episode 187 of You Are a Lawyer.

She urges new grads and law students to “cast your net wide” and question the limiting belief that success only looks one way. Whether you're pivoting into corporate compliance, content creation, or coaching, your law degree isn’t wasted—it’s just one chapter in your larger story..

Lawyer Side Hustles

Danielle is the founder and host of Redefined Radio, a podcast and creative space where she tells her story, shares mindset tips, and highlights others who have pivoted from traditional careers. What began as a quiet dream rooted in her love for music and performance has evolved into a powerful platform that fuels her passion and helps others see what’s possible.

“Let’s just do it for no other reason because it’s fulfilling to you. And whatever comes from it, comes from it,” shares Danielle Lyn in Episode 187 of You Are a Lawyer.

Through the podcast—and her coaching and speaking work—Danielle is using her voice to bridge the gap between what people do and who they truly are. She’s reclaiming her creativity, reimagining success, and helping others feel seen in the process.
