About This Episode

Daya Naef’s Background

Daya has a diverse background that spans over 25 years in the legal field, primarily focusing on construction law. Originally from Daphne, Alabama, she spent a significant portion of her adult life in Louisiana, where she attended Loyola Law School. After obtaining her law degree, Daya practiced construction law for about 18 years, navigating the complexities of urban renewal projects in both Louisiana and Michigan. Her career took a pivotal turn following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which created a surge in demand for construction-related legal services. Daya's deep-rooted familiarity with the construction industry, stemming from her family's involvement in the field, ultimately guided her into this niche area of law.

“I had that kind of mid-career urge to do something different... it was a different venture," shares Daya Naef on You Are A Lawyer.

In 2016, Daya founded The Success Partner, a coaching and consulting firm designed to assist law firms and legal professionals in various stages of their careers. Her approach blends coaching and consulting, positioning her as a "co-pilot" for her clients as they navigate their professional journeys. This shift not only allowed her to leverage her legal expertise but also to fulfill her desire to make a positive impact in the legal community.

Why Law School

Daya Naef's journey to law school was influenced by her background and the desire to explore her interests beyond the family construction business. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in construction, she initially sought a different path. This exploration led her to pursue a law degree, as she recognized the versatility and opportunities that a legal education could provide. Daya's decision was also shaped by her understanding of the common law system, which she felt was more transferable, prompting her to obtain her bar in Michigan before eventually returning to Louisiana.

"I had an urge to do something different,," reflects Daya Naef on Episode 164 of You Are a Lawyer.

While in law school, Daya found herself captivated by the nuances of construction law. This realization came after she had already established herself in the field, particularly following the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which created a significant demand for legal expertise in construction. Reflecting on her law school experience, she indicated that her time in law school not only equipped her with legal knowledge but also opened her eyes to the various paths her career could take.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

With the rise of entrepreneurship and alternative career paths, many graduates are finding success in roles such as coaching, consulting, and even starting their own businesses. Daya emphasizes this shift, stating, "the sky is the limit," suggesting that today's law graduates can explore diverse avenues that align with their passions and skills. This flexibility allows them to leverage their legal education in innovative ways, whether by hanging their own shingle or venturing into fields like business, education, or environmental advocacy.

“If you're in a firm, and you just had to take that job, advocate for yourself and say, 'Hey, I really want to learn this other practice area’," emphasizes Daya Naef on Episode 164 of You Are a Lawyer.

Daya encourages young lawyers to advocate for themselves within their firms, emphasizing the importance of pursuing interests outside their initial practice areas. This proactive approach not only helps maintain job satisfaction but also fosters a more fulfilling career trajectory. By embracing the versatility of a law degree, graduates can carve out unique paths that resonate with their personal and professional aspirations.

Lawyer Side Hustles

In today's evolving legal landscape, many lawyers are exploring side hustles to diversify their income and pursue their passions outside of traditional practice. Daya Naef, founder of The Success Partner, exemplifies this trend by blending her legal expertise with coaching and consulting for law firms. Her business serves as a "co-pilot" for attorneys looking to grow their practices, whether they are solo practitioners or part of a small firm. This approach not only allows lawyers to leverage their skills in new ways but also provides them with the flexibility to explore their interests, such as Daya's passion for art and community engagement.

“The sky is the limit,” shares Daya Naef in Episode 164 of You Are a Lawyer.

Daya emphasizes the importance of embracing opportunities beyond the conventional legal career path. This mindset encourages young lawyers and law students to consider alternative avenues for their law degrees, such as starting their own businesses or consulting practices. By advocating for themselves and seeking out diverse experiences, lawyers can find fulfillment and success in both their primary careers and side ventures, ultimately enriching their professional lives.
