How To Build a Successful Podcast for Your Law Firm feat. Robert IngallsHow To Build a Successful Podcast for Your Law Firm feat. Robert Ingalls

About This Episode

Robert Ingalls’s Background

Robert is a former lawyer who practiced for about seven years, primarily in criminal defense and civil law. He found that the constant conflict and high stakes of legal practice led to severe anxiety, which became particularly overwhelming when he and his wife decided to start a family. This realization prompted him to reevaluate his career path, as he felt he could not be the father he wanted to be while struggling with his mental health. Robert transitioned from law to podcast production, where he discovered a passion for creating content that resonates with audiences. He now produces podcasts for law firms and has built a successful media business, LawPods.

"If you want to do something, it's on you. It's no one else's problem. It's no one else's fault. No one's going to save you," shares Robert Ingalls on You Are A Lawyer.

Robert holds a strong belief in personal responsibility and the importance of pursuing one's passions, even in the face of adversity. Through his work, Robert not only found fulfillment but also aims to help others navigate their own paths, particularly those in the legal profession who may be struggling with similar challenges.

Why Law School

Robert’s upbringing and family largely influenced his choice to attend law school. Growing up in a household that valued spirited debate and argument, he was drawn to the idea of becoming a lawyer. His fascination with criminal defense, spurred by watching shows that highlighted wrongful accusations, further solidified his desire to help those in need.

"I was very compelled by the victim side, but also by the accused side... someone who was just minding their business just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time would end up in jail," reflects Robert Ingalls on Episode 162 of You Are a Lawyer.

While Robert initially found fulfillment in the courtroom, his experience in law school and as a practicing attorney revealed the intense pressures and anxieties associated with the profession. He describes the overwhelming stress he felt, which ultimately led him to reassess his career path. This reflection was crucial as he transitioned from law to podcasting, where he found a more enjoyable and less anxiety-inducing environment.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

A law degree can also provide you with a vast array of opportunities outside of the legal profession, as Robert Ingalls shares in his conversation on the podcast. From litigation lawyer to podcast producer, Robert demonstrated that what you learn in law school — critical thinking, good communication, and problem-solving — can apply across disciplines very easily.

"If it doesn't serve you and if it's not serving your mental health, please do something else," explains Robert Ingalls, on this episode of You Are a Lawyer.

Robert's journey illustrates that a law degree can serve as a foundation for entrepreneurship and creative endeavors. By starting his own podcast and eventually launching LawPods, he found a niche that not only fulfilled his passion but also allowed him to help others in the legal profession. This reflects the growing trend of lawyers using their expertise to create content, engage with clients, and build personal brands.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Lawyers are increasingly exploring side hustles as a way to diversify their income and pursue passions outside of traditional legal practice. Robert Ingalls, a former lawyer turned podcast producer, exemplifies this trend with his venture, LawPods. Through LawPods, Robert helps lawyers create and manage their own podcasts, allowing them to share their expertise while building their personal brand. This not only provides a creative outlet for lawyers but also serves as a valuable marketing tool in an increasingly digital world.

“You show up, you talk, hang up. And then you've got a podcast,” shares Robert Ingalls in Episode 162 of You Are a Lawyer.

Engaging in a side business like podcasting can be a fulfilling way for lawyers to reconnect with their passions and alleviate the stress that often accompanies legal work. Robert's journey illustrates that with determination and the right support, lawyers can successfully pivot to new ventures. He emphasizes the importance of taking action, encouraging lawyers to embrace their entrepreneurial spirit and explore opportunities that align with their interests, ultimately leading to greater job satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
