About This Episode

How to Prioritize Family as a Lawyer

Aman Costigan runs a wellness business, is a partner at Shores Jardine, is a wife, #toddlermom, real estate investor, and master prioritizer. Aman acknowledges that finding time for work and personal life can be challenging, especially for an actively practicing lawyer. Listen as Aman explains why she advocates for lawyers and their mental health and why she is creating an Empire of Freedom.

However, Aman is often commended for her ability to prioritize and keep their businesses running while maintaining connections. Something that genuinely surprises Aman because she assumed that everyone lived their lives this way.

"I really just try to be an example for others but also just live my life the way I want to be living," exclaimed Aman Costigan in Episode 105 of the You Are A Lawyer podcast.

Aman expresses humility and mentions that she is just living their life, not understanding why it is considered so special. Aman tries to fit yoga into her daily life, even though she is constantly busy. Aman is a frequent public speaker about work-life balance, but questions whether "balance" is the right word to use. Aman emphasizes the importance of practicing law and pursuing personal desires, something that’s beneficial to every lawyer. The focus is on taking control of one's life and improving it rather than relying on external factors and running from the law.

"[People] must learn how to practice law and pursue the things that you really want in your life that you really desire rather than trying to escape from the law job," shares Aman Costigan on You Are A Lawyer.

Overall, the episode explores the concept of work-life balance and suggests the idea of work-life integration as a more suitable term. It highlights the challenges of balancing work and personal life but also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing personal interests and finding ways to integrate them into one's professional life.

"I'm just living my life. I don't understand why this is so special, but honestly without my husband's support, I wouldn't be able to do all the things," explains Aman Costigan about how she prioritizes.

What Can You Do With a Law Degree

Aman Costigan emphasizes the importance of integrating yoga and wellness practices into daily life beyond just the confines of a yoga mat. Aman acknowledges that lawyers constantly move, do, and multitask and seldom have the time or space for a traditional yoga practice. Therefore, Aman started offering easy yoga breathing techniques and other activities that can be done anytime and anywhere. The goal is to make yoga accessible and adaptable to fit into busy lifestyles through her business, Beyond Yoga for Lawyers.

Additionally, Aman Costigan mentions that she’s given multiple speeches about work-life balance but questions whether the term "balance" is appropriate. Life is about prioritizing! Specifically, finding ways to practice law while pursuing personal desires and goals. Instead of trying to escape from the demands of a legal career, Aman encourages individuals to take control of their lives and improve their lives by prioritizing.

"I get stressed, but I don't get anxious. [I tell others] Here's how I deal with it and I like having those open conversations and it being more acceptable and okay for us to talk about," explains Aman Costigan on You Are A Lawyer.

Since creating Beyond Yoga for Lawyers, Aman has added pillars to their wellness practices, building their "empire of freedom." She has been invited to speak at women's lawyers groups, where Aman shares her journey and provides guidance on achieving personal and professional fulfillment. During these talks, Aman Costigan also incorporates easy yoga breathing and other activities to provide practical tools for well-being. It is evident that Aman has incorporated yoga into every aspect of her life because even her husband, Tom, practiced yoga with her. Although the two no longer teach classes together, Aman relishes their time teaching and training other lawyers. Aman and Tom met in law school.

Side Hustles for Lawyers

In Episode 105, Aman Costigan discusses their experience as a business partner with her husband, Tom. Aman and Tom met in law school, are new parents, and investors in real estate.

"I really see the potential and being able to really craft whatever it is that you want in your life," explains Aman Costigan in Episode 105 of You Are A Lawyer.

Aman describes the exciting dynamic of working with her spouse because they have different strengths and bring different things to the table. Aman Costigan describes themselves as plan-oriented and disciplined, and their spouse shares these qualities in different ways. Aman emphasizes the importance of actively using the yoga skills she has learned in her relationship.

Aman Costigan mentions the importance of pausing before reacting to things and thinking before speaking to avoid saying something they may later regret. Aman acknowledges that there can be pressure and stress in the moment and the desire for things to go faster or for others to act a certain way. However, Aman highlights the importance of being aware of one's actions and considering how one wants to appear in the relationship. Aman understands that specific actions or words cannot be taken back, so it is crucial to be mindful of how they behave and communicate with their spouse.

Overall, Aman Costigan emphasizes the significance of using the yoga skills she learned, such as pausing, being aware, and thinking before reacting, in their business partnership with their spouse. Aman believes that these skills contribute to a healthier and more effective relationship.
