Kyle Sherman on You Are a Lawyer

Patrick Jester is an engineer, consultant, and law school graduate who built a meaningful career outside traditional legal practice after facing repeated bar exam setbacks. In this episode, he shares how he navigated disappointment, trusted the process, and created a path that aligned with his skills, faith, and long-term vision.

About This Episode

Background

Patrick Jester’s professional journey began long before law school, rooted in a technical and highly specialized field. He started his career in aviation before transitioning into metrology, the science of measurement, where he built deep expertise over more than two decades. With two engineering degrees focused on microelectronics and computer architecture, Patrick developed a strong analytical foundation that would later shape how he approached both law school and his career decisions.

“Metrology, the science of measurement chose me… and I fell in love with it," shares Patrick Jester on You Are A Lawyer.

Although his technical background was well established, Patrick didn’t initially see it as his long-term path. He pursued law school while continuing to work full time, balancing a demanding professional life with the rigor of legal education. His experience at Southern University Law Center stood out to him, particularly because of the professors—many of whom were actively practicing in their fields—bringing real-world context into the classroom in a way that felt both practical and inspiring.

Why Law School

Patrick chose to attend law school with a clear goal in mind: to integrate legal knowledge into the work he was already doing. His initial plan was to become a corporate attorney for his employer, combining his technical expertise with business and legal strategy. As he progressed through law school, he even began exploring tax law as a complementary skill set that could expand his ability to serve organizations.

“I decided that I wanted to try to focus in on business law so I could be the corporate attorney for my previous employer," explains Patrick Jester on Episode 244 of You Are a Lawyer.

However, the transition from law school to practice proved more difficult than expected. While working full time, Patrick faced the challenge of preparing for the bar exam without the dedicated study time many candidates rely on. After taking the exam five times and narrowly missing a passing score on his final attempt, he was forced to confront the possibility that his legal career might not look the way he originally envisioned.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Patrick’s career is a powerful example of a JD Advantage path. After taking the Louisiana bar exam five times and missing the final attempt by two points, he had to reimagine what his law degree could mean. Rather than seeing the JD as wasted, he began using the discipline, regulatory knowledge, and strategic thinking from law school in the world of metrology, compliance, audits, and laboratory accreditation.

“I don’t need the Juris Doctor to do what I do, but it sure does help," shares Patrick Jester on Episode 244 of You Are a Lawyer.

Today, Patrick works as an independent consultant and contractor, assessing calibration laboratories and helping organizations meet quality management standards. His legal training supports the work even though he is not practicing law in a traditional sense. The JD helps him understand regulations, navigate complex systems, and communicate across technical and business environments.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Beyond his primary career, Patrick has remained committed to causes that originally drew him to law school, including advocacy work related to foster care. While his professional path shifted, his underlying motivations—helping people and contributing to meaningful systems—did not disappear. Instead, they evolved alongside his career.

“I still participate with advocacy groups for foster parents and foster children and adoptive children as much as I can,” Patrick Jester expresses in Episode 244 of You Are a Lawyer.

Patrick also speaks openly about the emotional and mental journey that came with redefining his career. Through mentorship, leadership roles in professional organizations, and sharing his story, he contributes to a broader conversation about resilience and non-linear success. His work outside traditional practice reflects a deeper truth: fulfillment often comes not from following a prescribed path, but from staying aligned with your values even when the path changes.
