Making Legal Services Easier to Access feat. Lawrence Blackmon

Lawrence Blackmon on You Are a Lawyer

Lawrence Blackmon is a trial attorney, Mississippi House Representative, and the CEO of Legal Ease, a consumer facing legal tech company using artificial intelligence to help people handle certain non complex legal matters without hiring an attorney. In this episode, Lawrence shares how mock trial shaped his confidence, how he stepped into public service, and why he believes lawyers can use their training far beyond traditional practice.

About This Episode

Background

Lawrence Blackmon’s path started with a search for confidence and identity. He was not the varsity athlete, and academics did not feel like his strongest lane. Everything changed when a teacher gave him a choice between detention and joining her mock trial team. That single moment opened a door and gave him something he had not felt before: proof that he could be excellent at something.

“For the first time, I felt like I was good at something," shares Lawrence Blackmon on You Are A Lawyer.

Lawrence also grew up with a strong legacy nearby. His father was a well known Mississippi attorney and served in the Mississippi House of Representatives. That legacy brought pride, but it also created pressure, because Lawrence wanted to be known for who he was, not just whose son he was. That tension shaped how he thought about career, identity, and choosing a path that felt like his own.

Why Law School

Law school was not originally the plan Lawrence wanted. When Kyla asked if he grew up wanting to be an attorney like his father, his answer was direct: he wanted to do anything but that, because he wanted his own identity. He even imagined a completely different life, including veterinary work, shaped by time on a farm, 4-H, FFA, and livestock shows.

“No, I wanted to do anything but [be an attorney]," explains Lawrence Blackmon on Episode 234 of You Are a Lawyer.

But mock trial changed the trajectory. It was the first time Lawrence felt clarity about what he could do and who he could become. He loved the public speaking and the performance element, comparing trial work to acting and describing the courtroom as a stage. Mock trial did not just introduce him to law, it gave him direction, confidence, and momentum. From that point on, he stopped questioning what was next and began building toward trial practice intentionally.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

Lawrence’s answer is that legal training is a mindset, not a narrow job description. He talks about the way law school teaches you to digest information, ask questions, research, and figure things out. Those skills show up in the courtroom, but they also transfer into business building and public service.

“The experience of going to law school and the way that you're taught to digest information, ask questions, and figure things out… can be applied outside of the courtroom," shares Lawrence Blackmon on Episode 234 of You Are a Lawyer.

In Lawrence’s career, that has meant trying multiple lanes at once: trial attorney, startup CEO, and elected official. He frames the law degree as a kind of superpower that travels with you, whether you are practicing at a firm or leading in another arena. His message to law students and early career lawyers is not to limit themselves to what is traditionally expected, especially when there are community needs that legal minds can help solve.

Lawyer Side Hustles

Lawrence co-founded Legal Ease in 2023 with the goal of making legal easier and more accessible for consumers. Legal Ease is built to help people handle what he calls non complex legal matters without going through the full traditional attorney process, especially when the work is largely checklist driven and expensive simply because it requires a lawyer’s time to ask questions and process information.

“I like getting up every day and working towards building something,” Lawrence Blackmon expresses in Episode 234 of You Are a Lawyer.

He describes Legal Ease as consumer facing legal technology powered by artificial intelligence, designed for matters like expungements, no fault divorce, and certain personal injury situations. The platform is meant to guide users through the same questions a lawyer would ask and help them move through the process without paying what he calls exorbitant fees. He even names the AI component of the platform.
