Nikita Lamar is a Texas attorney, entrepreneur, mediator, and author who built a virtual law firm while living in Mexico. In this episode, she shares how taking an unconventional path to law school shaped her career, why estate planning became deeply personal, and how lawyers can create careers that fit their lives instead of fitting into outdated expectations.
About This Episode
Background
Nikita Lamar's path to becoming a lawyer wasn't linear. Although her grandparents spoke the legal profession over her life when she was a child, life took her in several different directions before she eventually returned to law school. Along the way, she worked in nonprofit leadership, became a massage therapist, and cared for her grandparents before finally earning her law degree.
"We absolutely should have people in every profession who have the straight path, who have the wayward path, who have the in between," shares Nikita Lamar on You Are A Lawyer.
Today, Nikita owns Lamar Legal Group, a virtual Texas law firm focusing on estate planning, probate, guardianships, and family law. She also lives primarily in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, proving that lawyers can build successful practices without being tied to a traditional office.
Why Law School
Although becoming an attorney had been spoken over her life since childhood, Nikita's journey to law school was interrupted when her grandfather became seriously ill. She stepped away from her legal education to help care for her family, eventually building an entirely different career before deciding to return to law school years later.
"I needed to do what I said I was gonna do," explains Nikita Lamar on Episode 258 of You Are a Lawyer.
Returning to law school in her thirties required resilience, including retaking the LSAT and starting over after years away from the classroom. Looking back, Nikita doesn't see those years as detours. Instead, she believes every experience contributed to the lawyer and entrepreneur she has become today.
What Can You Do with a Law Degree
For Nikita, a law degree creates possibilities rather than limitations. Throughout the conversation, she encourages students and young lawyers to stop thinking there is only one path to success. Whether someone wants to practice traditionally, build a business, live abroad, write books, or create entirely new legal services, the opportunities are endless.
"The possibilities are endless," shares Nikita Lamar on Episode 258 of You Are a Lawyer.
Her own career reflects that philosophy. Beyond practicing law, Nikita has created an estate planning journal, launched a Divorce Retreat designed for couples seeking amicable divorces, and built a virtual law firm that allows her to serve Texas clients while living internationally. Her story demonstrates that lawyers can build careers around the lives they want instead of the expectations placed upon them.
Lawyer Side Hustles
Nikita's entrepreneurial mindset extends far beyond her law practice. Inspired by gaps she observed in the legal profession, she developed The Last Last, an estate planning journal that helps families organize important information before it's needed. More recently, she created Divorce Retreat, an innovative service that combines mediation, legal guidance, and professional resources into a collaborative experience for couples seeking an amicable divorce.
"You can create anything with your law degree,” Nikita Lamar expresses in Episode 258 of You Are a Lawyer.
Rather than waiting for someone else to solve problems she repeatedly encountered, Nikita chose to build solutions herself. Whether developing new legal services, writing resources for clients, or embracing virtual practice, she continues finding creative ways to use her legal education beyond traditional practice.
