About This Episode

Jon Groth’s Background

Jon Groth is a personal injury attorney and the managing partner of Groth Law Firm, based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Marquette University Law School and initially entered law school with aspirations of pursuing a career in criminal law. However, after discovering his passion for advocacy during an internship at a personal injury law firm in Chicago, he shifted his focus to personal injury law. Over the years, Jon has built a successful practice that includes various areas of personal injury, such as car accidents, premises liability, and even vaccine injuries, which he became involved with after acquiring another law firm specializing in that area.

“You just never know who you're gonna talk to," shares Jon Groth on You Are A Lawyer.

Throughout his career, Jon has emphasized the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in the legal field. He believes that being a lawyer requires the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of clients and professionals. Jon's journey reflects his commitment to helping others while also embracing the complexities of running a law firm and managing a team of attorneys and staff.

Why Law School

Jon’s journey to law school was not a straightforward path, as he initially pursued a degree in music performance with aspirations of playing jazz saxophone. However, after changing his major multiple times, he settled on political science with a business administration minor, which ultimately led him to law school at Marquette. His initial intention was to enter the field of criminal law, influenced by the political aspects of the legal system in Wisconsin, where district attorneys are elected. Jon's experience in law school, however, shifted his focus as he discovered a passion for personal injury law during an internship at a law firm in Chicago. He found fulfillment in helping people and enjoyed the advocacy involved in this area of law.

"I wish they had [more practical business management education] back when I went to law school," reflects Jon Groth on Episode 166 of You Are a Lawyer.

Jon highlights the gap he felt in his legal education regarding the business side of running a law practice. His journey illustrates the importance of adaptability and continuous learning, as he transitioned from a focus on criminal law to personal injury, ultimately leading him to successfully manage his own law firm.

What Can You Do with a Law Degree

A law degree opens up a diverse range of career opportunities beyond traditional legal practice. As Jon Groth discussed in the podcast, one can manage and run their own law firm, as he does with Groth Law Firm, which specializes in personal injury cases. This role involves not only practicing law but also overseeing the business aspects of the firm, such as managing staff, handling financials, and implementing systems like the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to streamline operations.

“You have to really advance because everybody else is," emphasizes Jon Groth on Episode 166 of You Are a Lawyer.

A law degree can lead to specialized areas of practice, such as personal injury law, vaccine injury claims, or even consulting roles within the legal field. Groth's experience illustrates how one can expand their practice by acquiring other firms or areas of expertise, as he did with vaccine injury cases. This adaptability allows lawyers to serve a wide array of clients and address unique legal issues, demonstrating the versatility of a law degree.

Lawyer Side Hustles

As Jon Groth discussed in his podcast episode, the legal profession offers unique opportunities for attorneys to leverage their skills beyond traditional practice. For instance, Groth mentioned his experience with marketing himself while he was an associate. This proactive approach not only helped him generate revenue for the firm but also laid the groundwork for his eventual transition to running his own personal injury law firm.

“I wanted to show them, hey, I can do this and I'm bringing in my own cases,” shares Jon Groth in Episode 166 of You Are a Lawyer.

In addition to traditional legal practice, lawyers can engage in various side ventures, such as consulting, teaching, or even creating content through podcasts and social media. Groth's own podcast, Groth Gets It, exemplifies how attorneys can share their knowledge and connect with a broader audience while simultaneously enhancing their personal brand. By embracing these side hustles, lawyers can not only increase their income but also foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development, which Groth emphasizes as essential in the legal field.
